Adrenal Glands in Lactating Rats Bearing Hypothalamic Lesions.

چکیده
It has been previously reported (Y o k o y am a and 0 t a, 1959a and b) that the lesions placed in the periventricular and the medial hypothalamic areas in lactating rats impaired oxytocin secretion selectively. Considerable amount of milk was obtained by oxytocin replacement in these rats, although the amount of milk was less than that obtained in normal lactating animals. There has been a considerable body of evidence indicating the view that the adrenal corticoids were one of the critical factors for maintaining lactation in rats (C o w i e, 1961). G a l e, T a 1 ei s n i k, Friedman and McCann (1961) demonstrated direct relation between the adrenal size and lactational performance in lactating rats bearing lesions in median eminence. An attempt was made to associate histological changes in adrenal glands with those in lactational performance in lactating rats bearing hypothalamic lesions, since changes in adrenal glands were presumed to reflect those in the secretory level of the gland.

Studies on the mammary glands of lactating rats bearing hypothalamic lesions.
It has recently been shown, in experiments on lactating rats with hypothalamic lesions, that milk can be expressed from the mammary glands of rearing-failed, lesioned rats by weak palpation even 10 days after the operation when vigorous suckling by young continued, and that a considerable amount of milk is obtained from mammary glands of these lesioned rats by the regular administration of oxyt...
متن کاملThe hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis response to endotoxin is attenuated during lactation.
Pregnancy and lactation are times of prolonged physiological changes affecting the neuroendocrine and immunological systems. One well-characterized change is the neuroendocrine hyporesponsiveness to acute stressful stimuli. We have now designed studies to see whether there is an alteration in the response of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to an immunological inflammatory challeng...
متن کاملEffects of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes on Micro-Anatomical Changes of Adrenal Gland in Male Wistar Rats
Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
متن کاملBlunted HPA axis response in lactating, vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro rats.
Adaptation to stress is a basic phenomenon in mammalian life that is mandatorily associated with the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. An increased resting activity of the HPA axis can be measured during pregnancy and lactation, suggesting that these reproductive states lead to chronic load in females. In this study, we examined the consequences of the congenital lack o...
متن کاملThe anteroventral bed nucleus of the stria terminalis differentially regulates hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis responses to acute and chronic stress.
The anteroventral region of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) stimulates hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis responses to acute stress. However, the role of the anterior BST nuclei in chronic drive of the HPA axis has yet to be established. Therefore, this study tests the role of the anteroventral BST in physiological responses to chronic drive, using a chronic variable...
